About us

We've been building software for Portuguese companies for more than 20 years

Selfcare isn't a first-timer's bet. It's the newest product from a house that created InvoiceXpress and ClanHR, and that runs its own companies on the software it builds.

  1. 2007

    RUPEAL and KWAN

Rui Pedro Alves opens RUPEAL (the name comes straight from his own: RUi PEdro ALves) and starts the tech staffing business that would become KWAN, today a national reference for placing engineering talent, with hundreds of people.

  2. 2009

    InvoiceXpress

From the question 'how do you issue an invoice?' comes InvoiceXpress, the pioneer of online invoicing in Portugal. It reaches more than 18,000 companies and is sold in 2024 to Visma, one of Europe's largest technology groups. Built without investors, from the first day to the last.

  3. 2014

    ClanHR

For years ClanHR becomes the reference in HR software for Portuguese SMEs: employee profiles, leave, payroll and employee self-service. Today it belongs to the same house as Selfcare, and the team that created it is the one now building its successor.

  4. 2026

    Selfcare

Everything we learned in two decades of software for Portuguese companies, rebuilt from scratch for the AI era. Selfcare is the evolution of ClanHR: the same domain knowledge, proven over more than ten years, in a new product.

Why "Selfcare"?

The name comes from employee self-care: the idea that each employee manages their own relationship with the company. In Selfcare, each person manages their personal and professional data, chooses what they share with colleagues, checks their payslips on their profile and follows their history of contracts and raises over time.

And while employees look after their part, the manager knows payroll will run without a hitch and the link to accounting will work without friction. Each person handles what's theirs, and the whole company works better for it.

Rui Pedro Alves

Rui Pedro Alves

Founder · Chairman of the RUPEAL group

Computer engineer from ISEL, from the Algarve, in business since 2007. Managing Director of InvoiceXpress at Visma and chairman of the RUPEAL group, which owns KWAN and Selfcare.

RUPEAL

In 2006, as his generation left for London, Amsterdam and Berlin, Rui decided to stay and build in Portugal. He started as a consultant at his first client, using their reception and infrastructure, and from that came the principle that still guides the house: use what you have instead of waiting for what's missing.

Two decades later, that path has produced KWAN, InvoiceXpress (sold to Visma in 2024, never having raised outside capital) and now Selfcare. Always with the same principle: our products are born to solve a problem of our own. InvoiceXpress was born because we needed to invoice without suffering. Selfcare is born because the group has more than 300 employees whose absences and pay need managing efficiently.

That's why, before being sold to anyone, Selfcare already pays the salaries and manages the leave of the group's own companies, every month. We eat our own cooking.

The company

Selfcare is developed by Selfcare, Lda., the company that also owns ClanHR, part of the RUPEAL group.
